BA Thread History
The British Association (BA) screw thread system was introduced in 1903 by the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Unlike Whitworth, BSW, BSF or later Unified threads, BA was designed specifically for precision instruments, electrical equipment and fine mechanical assemblies. It became the dominant thread form for small screws used in scientific instruments, telecommunications, early electronics and fine engineering throughout the 20th century.
BA threads are still encountered today in legacy equipment, model engineering, electrical components and specialist instrumentation.
Origins of the BA Thread System
At the turn of the 20th century, Britain’s scientific and electrical industries were expanding rapidly. Existing thread systems such as Whitworth and BSF were too coarse for delicate mechanisms, and manufacturers often used their own proprietary miniature threads.
To address this, the British Association introduced a fully metric‑based thread system — decades before metrication became widespread in the UK.

Geometry of the BA Thread Form
BA threads use a distinctive 47.5° thread angle with rounded crests and roots. The system is fully metric in its proportions, even though it was introduced in an imperial‑dominant engineering environment.

BA Numbering System
BA sizes run from 0BA (largest) to 16BA (smallest). Each size is derived from the next using a geometric progression:
- Pitch decreases by a factor of 0.9 per size
- Diameter is defined as 6 × pitch1.2
This mathematical approach was far ahead of its time and remains one of the most elegant thread sizing systems ever created.
BA vs Whitworth / BSF / Unified Threads
BA threads differ significantly from other British and American thread systems:
